ABOUT KYRGYZSTAN

Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, also known as Kirghizia (in Russian), is a landlocked country in Central Asia. It is bounded by Kazakhstan on the northwest and north, by China on the east and south, and by Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on the south and west. Most of Kyrgyzstan’s borders run along mountain crests. The capital is Bishkek. The capital city of Bishkek being only 125 years old is heavily influenced by the Russian way of life and Soviet architecture. 

The capital BISHKEK is situated in the Chui lowlands in the north of the country, between the Talas valley in the west and the eastern Issyk-Kul region. It is a mountainous country harbouring Lake Issyk-Kul, the second-largest mountain lake in the world after Titicaca. The country is also known as ‘The Switzerland of Asia’ because of its natural beauty. Presently, Kyrgyzstan is a democratic republic.

The climate of Kyrgyzstan is continental with hot summers and cold winters in the mountain regions. Yet, approximately 247 days a year are sunny. In Bishkek, winter is mostly sunny, with occasional heavy fog and snowstorms. The average daily high in winter reaches 3° C (37.4° F). Spring is generally mild, with the first hot days coming in May and June. During the summer, the temperature averages 31° C (87.8° F), though temperatures can soar even higher, as high as 45° C (113° F).

The Kyrgyzstani Som is the currency of Kyrgyzstan. The currency code for Soms is KGS, and the currency symbol is лв.

The major religion is Islam with 80%of Kyrgyzstan’s citizens being Sunni Muslims. Christian and Russian orthodox make up a further17%, with 13% following other religions.

 

Most Kyrgyz speak a language belonging to the north-western group of the Turkic languages, especially Kyrgyz. The official language is Kyrgyz, a Turkic language closely related to Uzbek, Kazakh, Turkmen and Turkish. Uzbek, Kazakh ,Tajik, Korean, and various other regional languages and dialects are also spoken.

Kyrgyzstan is the safest country for women’s. According to the Global Peace Index in 2019, Kyrgyzstan ranked 95th out of 163. Kyrgyzstan is a safe country for Indian students.
